I had no idea what I started but natural health tips on beating the bugs keep
pouring in. This certainly does not bug me and I am happy to share these tips
with you!

“Good article Gary on Deet. Thank you also for the links to the Extension
Toxicology Network.
“The remedy I used successfully my last time visiting the coast was
to use two essential oils: 1) oil of geranium and 2) oil of lemongrass, both
of which are mosquito repellents. I simply blended them into aloe vera gel,
or calendula gel, perhaps with a bit of coconut oil and applied it to my skin.
To keep them away from the cabana's interior (all windows open) I simply took
the lids off of the small bottles in which the oils come and set them open
on the dining table. This aroma mixture made it undesirable to the bugs while
gracing us humans with the delightful smell of those very aromatic and pleasing
plants. Of course I do also incorporate several cloves of raw garlic in my
salads and I cook generously with the garlic as well. Also if one leaves the
processed sugar and animal fats out of one's diet, that too will make you less
desirable to the pests, being vegan makes this easy. Fruit sugar from raw fruit
does not attract them. To note, I had not narry a one bite from the critters.
I've always wondered why the creator of this wonderful world made creatures
such as mosquitoes. What positive addition do they make? Does anyone know the
answer to this? many blessings bob.”

“Hi Gary, As you know I do a tremendous amount of field work, often
in summer and often in bug-infested swamps where mosquitoes are abundant.
“Even with the so-called "risks" of West Nile Virus, I NEVER
use any bug repellants containing DEET. Decades ago I used it often, but got
scared when my plastic pens MELTED when some repellant spilled on them.
“Not mentioned in your report is the risk of cancer. Since skin can
easily absorb liquids placed on them, I decided I did not want DEET (a chemical)
being absorbed into my skin.
“Surprisingly, the more time you spend in the bush, the more you get
used to mosquitoes. Only on very rare occasions, when mosquitoes are horrendous,
do I apply a repellent, and then only a natural one such as Citronella or an
equivalent.
“By the way, I think this ‘West Nile Virus’ thing is a farce.
The repellent makers push it to the limit, so they can obviously sell more
of their products. For someone who is relatively healthy, the effect of West
Nile Virus are rather mild. At most you will have flu symptoms for a few days,
and that's it. Also, I understand you can only get West Nile Virus ONCE, and
then you are immune to it (that's something the companies never mention!).
“In all likelihood I have already had West Nile Virus, especially since
for the past (4) summers (not this summer) I was doing extensive fieldwork.
Cheers, Alan”
The mindset of the West in economics and health, ignores the long term consequences
of our actions. If something does not kill us (or our financial well being)
quickly, then it is okay.
International Investments – Who Says the US is Bankrupt? Yesterday’s
message showed how ignoring the long term consequences of US debt has bankrupt
the nation. See spottingtrends.com/investment/investment_philosophy_34.htm
We should ask what the long term consequences of continually covering our
skin in DEET could be. DEET began as an insect repellant during wartime to
protect soldiers fighting in jungles infested with malarial mosquitoes. Fair
enough, but then it became accepted for commercial use. Once this happened
the industries that manufacture and sell DEET began to protect its existence
which makes it hard for us to find and see the real truth.
Whether DEET is good or not may be controversial, but there are enough suggestions
of risk that we should be bugged. If we can find natural alternatives (that
also probably cost less), why not use them?
Until next message, may everlasting wealth and good health come naturally
to you!

Speaking of bugs,
Great benefits of being at the farm this time of the year are the flowers
which bring good bugs…check out these bees in the foxgloves.
And the butterflies.

Here are some Blue Ridge sunflowers in our fireplace room. Note the picture
on the mantle. An interesting story and a business opportunity on this in tomorrow’s
message.
