Dental problems today can be a pain in the neck, the
mouth and a real pain in the pocketbook. This does not have to be so as Steve
merchant, our man in Ecuador, reports:
Gary, I took one of our guests at El
Meson to Ibarra (20 minutes from the hotel) to see the pain free laser dentist,
Dr. Proano.

“The first thing you see is a striking modern building next to some parkland.
Here a number of doctors, specialists and our laser dentist are practicing
from modern offices.

Dr. Proano’s Reception
“Dr. Proano has his office on the first floor. It is a hive of activity
but we arrive on time and offered a friendly smile and 'hola' to
the Doctor. He asks her to sit down and within 1 minute she was in the dentist's
chair whilst the dental assistant brings a fresh set of sterilized implements.

“Where was the paperwork? Here, in Ecuador, litigation hasn't run rampage
and form filling, if there is any, is kept to an absolute minimum.
Reputation is everything, so doctors and dentists build their list of clientele
after years of good service within the community.
“The doctor saw straight away that she looked good for implants below
but he was not sure if she had enough bone for an implant in
the upper row. He needed xrays to confirm. We took in a taxi, ($1), and whizzed
8 blocks to an office that specializes in dental x-rays. An incredibly 15
short minutes later we were back with the doctor.

Dr. Proano
“He studied the x-rays and spent nearly 10 minutes explaining possibilities.
His initial supposition was right. The patient needed a
bone graft on the upper jaw but the lower jaw was ready to receive the implants.
“Now the good news. The quote was $1,000 per implant. The patient’s
face registered surprise. A US dentist had quoted $15,000
for 3 implants and suggested she needed a bone graft on the lower jaw, without
taking x-rays. She suspected he might be fishing for extra business.
“Dr. Munoz, the implant specialist, has twenty years of
experience and speaks good English. He has carried out thousands of
surgeries over the years.
“I ask Dr. Proano some typical costs. These are listed
below.
“Crown with pure porcelain - $150
Root canal (per tooth) - $30
General cleaning - $20
Whitening for the whole mouth - $120
Removing mercury amalgam fillings - $30 each one (done every week by Dr.
Proano)
Implants - $1,000 each
Bridges - $100 each piece (so a 4 tooth bridge would be $400)
Prosthetics to recreate upper teeth from nothing - $4,000-$6,000
Prosthetics to recreate lower teeth from nothing - $2,000-$4,000
“A
further advantage is that given some notice Dr. Proano will schedule
in patients for a complete procedure over a 2-3 week
period. This allows for would-be patients to sightsee and enjoy Ecuador while
still receiving top quality treatment.

“As we left, our guest, who was leaving shortly for the USA was already
planning her next trip back and wondering which friends
would come on the next trip so they could also get some much needed dental
treatment without so much pain in the mouth or budget.”
