Lose Weight Jog in a Box-Dance in the Street

By Gary Scott

Here is a vital health tip on how to weight easily.  Jog in a box while you sit!

There are weight loss and cardiovascular benefits from saunas. They have longed been recognized for their health benefits in part because they enhance circulation and oxygenate the tissues.

The traditional sauna is electric, wood or gas fired. Preheating to 150-200 degrees is required for copious sweating. The intense heat is difficult for many to tolerate, especially when ill.

Far-infrared saunas do even more! They heat the body, but the air remains cool. Sweating begins quickly and the experience is rather pleasant. Preheating is unnecessary which saves electricity.

As the body increases sweat production to cool itself, the heart works harder.  Heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate increases. Blood pressure drops.  This helps improve cardiovascular fitness.

The Journal of the American Medical Association reported   "A moderately conditioned person can easily sweat off 500 gms. in a sauna, consuming nearly 300 kcal - the equivalent of running 2 - 3 miles. A heat-conditioned person can easily sweat off 600 - 800 kcal with no adverse effects. While the weight of the water loss can be regained by rehydration with water, the calories consumed will not be."

Infrared saunas do even more. They generate two to three times the sweat produced in a hot-air sauna.  The weight loss math is good because producing one gram of sweat requires 0.586 calories.

You can burns 400 or more calories in just one 20-minute session!

Compare this to the calories a 150-pound person normally burns up in 20-minutes of exercise:

20 Minute SPORT  CALORIES
Marathon Running 393
Vigorous Racquet Ball 310
Swimming (crawl stroke) 200
Jogging 200
Tennis (fast game) 195
Cycling (10 mph) 175
Golfing (without a cart) 100
Walking (3.5 mph) 150

There are some cautions.  Infrared heating may aggravate pacemakers or heart conditions.  At higher altitude the heat may have faster, different or stronger effects.  Anyone with blood clot problems should also beware. Internal heat expands blood vessels and could release a clot.

We have added infrared sauna treatments to out health regime at the El Meson R & R program, but limit the time from the normal 20 recommended minutes to 10 minutes.   We combine the infrared sauna treatments with the health regime at the El Meson R & R program with a massage which enhances the benefits.

We recently looked at the potential of investing the Brazilian real. Here is an interesting note sent from reader who has lived there. This is a worthwhile read as it enrichens our understanding of this currency and gives us an opposing view.

Gary, One time in Brazil, I went to play cards with some friends.    They pulled out a coffee can full of old coins; ..........  cruzados, cruzeiros, new cruzados, old Brazilian money from the '70's, '80's and early 90's and now totally worthless, .......... to use as poker chips in our card game.

“The present currency, the Brazil R$, has only been in existence since 1993.   It started out at 1:1 parity to the US Dollar.    Since then, it has suffered 2 major currency crises and devaluations.   Both crises followed presidential elections in 1999 and 2003.   In the most recent crisis in 2003, it fell all the way to 4:1 vs. the Dollar.

“Now things are going well for Brazil.  They're running a trade surplus, foreign money is coming into the country, the Bovespa is soaring, and the currency has recovered to almost 2:1. (actually 2.15 to the Dollar)

“But what is the long-term outlook for the R$, given the history of Brazilian currencies?  Will the good times last? I don't know.  I don't think you can buy R$ bonds and then go to sleep. The high interest rates might look attractive, until you learn what the inflation rate is in Brazil.

“This year is another presidential election year in Brazil. Historically,  currency volatility has increased at times of elections, or shortly thereafter.  They are about due for another currency crisis in early 2007  ( the 4 year cycle). Thus my opinion is that now is not a particularly favorable time to be making R$ investments.  Further, the Brazilian government does not want a stronger R$ because it hurts exports.

“It seems most profitable to make your investments at times of some crisis.  And if you're patient and wait, eventually there is one.

“By the way the plural of Real is Reais, because in Portuguese the L is replaced with an I,  when making the plural of a word ending in L .   And the pronunciation is "Hay-al" and "Hay-ice" since the "R" in Portuguese is pronounced like an English "H".”

This reader has a good point about not going to sleep. This is true for any investment!  Waiting for times of crisis is also good and I especially like his comment about watching the inflation rate.  One way to get a ball park feel of whether a currency is over or under valued versus another currency is to compare interest rates less inflation.

According to the www.bloomberg.com, Brazil’s inflation rate is 6.22%

SEE THIS PAGE

The U.S. inflation rate according to inflationdata.com is 3.60%

At Jyske Bank, you can buy Brazilian government bonds that mature 2016 and are denominated in R$ that yield 12.18%.  Deduct the inflation of 6.22% and the real yield is 5.96%.

You can buy US$ US government bonds maturing 2013 that yield 4.84%. Deduct 3.60% inflation and your real yield is 1.24%.

The Brazilian bonds have a yield of over four times the US bonds and this is in part because of election fears. With Brazil’s economy strong and the currency appreciating perhaps Jyske’s suggestion to buy makes sense after all.

One reason we love Ecuador is the beautiful people. Here is a photo one of the last import export delegates took of some Ecuadorian children dancing in the streets when our little village had one of its numerous parades!

Until next message may your health and wealth keep you dancing in the streets too!

P.S. R & R at El Meson. The week includes a tour of sacred indigenous places such as Peguche Waterfall where there is a sedate park and enormous stands of eucalyptus. Unwind in the evening with fresh made juice and a roaring, pungent eucalyptus fire. After specially prepared dinners enjoy an hour long full body massage. If you prefer, you can roam the numerous lakes for fishing and adventure sports. There is a pleasant nine hole golf course to enjoy. The climate is dry and averages 68 degrees F so you can also just soak in the sun.  This five day, six night therapy includes travel to and from Quito airport, six nights stay at El Meson, de las Flores, the Shmanic healing session, visits to Chachimbiro spa, Cuicocha Lake, the world famous Otavalan, Cotacachi and San Antonio de Ibarra markets plus 11 specially prepared Andean health meals and exercise lessons and four full hour long massages.  DETAILS
