Take a Load Off: Bouncy Bungee Backpack

Every time we step out our body moves up and down. Add a load of schoolbooks or hiking supplies in a handy dandy backpack and that’s a load on Annie. It’s a problem that weighs in internationally, one traditionally solved by Asian merchants piling their wares on flexible bamboo poles. Their innovation gave inventor Larry Rome an idea.

Why not suspend an ergonomic backpack from a frame that levels the load via strategically placed bungee cords? It turns out that “By suspending the load, you knock out 86 percent of the extra force, making it comfortable to run even with a heavy load,” says Rome. Bones and muscles benefit.

Future backpacks might even generate power from body movements. A nifty free recharge for portable electronics.
