From Darkness, Light is the debut album of Emily Howell, a computer program with the ability to synthesize musical pieces resembling the works of history’s most renowned classical composers. Emily’s programmer, David Cope, professor emeritus at the University of California, Santa Cruz, believes that such artistically able machines signal an opportunity for collaboration with human artists, not a digital replacement for them. “Computers are there [for us] to extend ourselves through them,” he says. Human musicians perform most of Emily’s compositions.
